In 1988 a pedestrian bridge was built at the end of Bargate Street across Castle Way / Portland Terrace linking the mediaeval walls.

The pictures below show the bridge and walls. The area is somewhat down-at-heel, with an out-of-use public lavatory building up against the walls. The small circular building is Southampton Shopmobility.

On the bridge there is a sculpture of John le Flemyng, MP and mayor of Southampton in the late thirteenth and early fourteenth century. The artist is Anthony Griffiths.
