A branch of the Bank of England opened on Southampton High Street in May 1940, the first Bank of England branch to be opened in the provinces for over 100 years. Built of Portland stone, it was situated at 31-33 High Street, next to the Dolphin Hotel. The bank closed in 1987 and a branch of TSB opened on the site. The building still stands (image 2).
