The Atherley School was an independent girls' school set up by the Church School’s Company in 1926. The initiative for its establishment came from Canon Lovett, rector of St Mary’s Church. It was through his connections with the Atherley family that a site on Hill Lane was obtained for the school on what had previously been Atherley land. The school re-located to Grove Place in 1997, and closed as part of a merger with Embley Park School in 2006.
