Asylum Green
This is the grassy strip on the east side of the Avenue at its southern end, which has also been known as Padwell Green and College Green. This name derives from the branch of the Royal Military Asylum, which in 1816 was established in the former cavalry barracks immediately opposite the green, later the site of the Ordnance Survey offices.
