This house, situated at the northern end of Oak Road, was purchased by the council in 1921 and converted into the first Woolston public library. In 1926 when a new purpose-built public library was erected on the corner of Portsmouth Road and Oak Road, Alston Villa was linked to the new building and became part of the new library.

The villa had been built in 1855 and had been a residential property until its purchase by the council.
