The Chapel area of Southampton borders Northam on the west bank of the Itchen. The area may be named after Our Lady of Grace Chapel, Trinity Chapel or Chapel Mill.

During the nineteenth and early twentieth century many dock workers and seafarers lived in Chapel.

A fair, Chapel or Trinity Fair, was held in the area.

Much of Chapel was demolished as part of the slum clearances in the 1930s. The photograph below is of an unidentified house in Chapel and shows the level of poverty of local people at this time.
